The monumental cross slab at Forres displays the most graphic visual record of a Viking military onslaught in Britain. New drawings by John Borland allow the story of its grisly battle scenes to be understood for the first time. Decoding the events, which include horse sacrifice, employs several strands of evidence, from the Bible to contemporary heroic poetry and Viking archaeological remains.
